Exercise – LIFE Programs (Living Independently through Fitness and Exercise)

Being physically and socially active are the keys to aging well. Staying physically active helps us to remain strong and flexible and able to carry out everyday tasks. It plays a role in preventing illness, alleviating symptoms related to chronic health problems, improving our mood, and reducing stress. Also, it helps to reduce the risk of falling. Physical activity is for everyone at any age, even frail adults. It's never too late to get active or to start being active again. Please call to register.

Seniors' exercise programs

Are offered through Town and Country Support Services at several locations in Huron. Certified volunteer instructors who are knowledgeable and experienced put you at ease in order for you to have a safe and enjoyable program. Participants are encouraged to work at their own pace and ability. Each participant is required to fill out a health screening form before beginning any exercise program. The exercise programs are a lot of fun and a great way to get out and meet new people while also staying fit and healthy. Programs are held regularly in Wingham, Seaforth, Exeter, Bayfield, Clinton and Zurich.

Nordic Walking

Ontarians are taking active living in stride, doing what comes naturally, like walking, to stay fit. Now they have another option, one that has been taking the fitness world by storm — Nordic walking. Nordic walking or pole walking — is a full-body, cardiovascular exercise that engages the arms, back, stomach, and legs. Many fitness experts agree that Nordic walking is one of the safest and yet most effective forms of exercise because it burns up to 46% more calories and increases your cardiovascular workout by 25% compared to walking. Whether you're an Olympic athlete or a grandmother with arthritis, you will get something from this exercise. Nordic Walking sessions are run in the spring and fall in Wingham, Blyth, Goderich, Clinton, Bayfield, Seaforth, Hensall, Zurich and Exeter and Grand Bend.

Indoor Walking

Walking is a very popular activity as it is inexpensive, convenient, simple to perform and carries a low risk for injury, making it an ideal activity choice for older adults. Beginning with a walking program will interest people who do not feel comfortable starting out with the exercise classes. Indoor walking programs are held throughout the winter at Zurich Arena Hall, Hensall Arena Hall, Exeter Arena Hall, Betty Cardno Centre in Clinton, Bayfield Arena Hall and Blyth Arena Hall.
